Elevate your Hydration

Summer's here, and the temperatures are soaring!

As we sweat it out, staying hydrated becomes even more crucial.

We all intuitively know how important it is to drink enough water  … but do we really know how much we should be drinking, and WHY it is so essential to our health?

Well, let me tell you.  There's lots of interesting things to know. 🙂

First, our body's made up of 60% Water.

Water is the foundation of life, and plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function.

So it's important to be aware of just how important it is, as well as how much you should be optimally getting in on a daily basis.

Here's how proper hydration benefits you:

  • Boosted Energy Levels: Feeling sluggish? Dehydration is a major culprit. Water keeps your body functioning optimally, delivering energy to your cells and fighting fatigue.

  • Enhanced Cognitive Function: Your brain is mostly water! When dehydrated, you might experience brain fog, difficulty concentrating, and even headaches. Proper hydration keeps your brain sharp and focused.   Have you been drinking enough water? is always the first question I ask my kids when they tell me they have a headache.

  • Peak Performance: Whether you're a gym enthusiast or a casual walker, water is your workout partner. It regulates body temperature, lubricates joints, and delivers nutrients to muscles, maximizing your performance and recovery.

  • Weight Management Ally: Water can help you feel full, potentially reducing calorie intake. Aim for a glass before meals to curb cravings and support healthy weight management.

And get this! Did you know mild dehydration can even slow your metabolism and impact stress hormones, both contributing to belly fat?

  • Radiant Skin: Dry, flaky skin? Water is your natural moisturizer! Hydration plumps your skin cells, giving you a healthy glow from the inside out.

  • Digestive Health: Water keeps things moving smoothly, preventing constipation and promoting overall gut health.

  • Detoxifier: Water is nature's detoxifier. It helps your kidneys flush out waste products, keeping your body clean and functioning efficiently.

How Much Water Do You Really Need?

A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces daily.

So, for a 150-pound person, that's about 75 ounces. Remember, filtered water is best, but decaf coffee, teas, and seltzer also contribute. If you exercise, add an extra ounce of water consumption for every minute of activity.

Making Hydration a Habit

Even with good intentions, we can fall short if we don't track our water intake. Here's how to create a system that works for you:

  • Find Your Perfect Vessel: Invest in a reusable water bottle (glass or stainless steel) and calculate how many refills you need to hit your goal. A large 32-ounce bottle makes it especially easy.

  • Track Your Progress: For regular glasses, determine how much water they hold and how many you need daily. Use rubber bands or a washable marker to track refills.

  • Carry a Water Bottle: Keep it with you at all times for easy sipping throughout the day.

  • Set Reminders: Use apps or alarms to nudge you to drink regularly.

  • Flavor Boost: Liven up plain water with fruits, vegetables, or herbs.

  • Eat Water-Rich Foods: Incorporate fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges into your diet.
